Mika Brzezinski, co-host of MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” apologized Friday for calling Secretary of State Mike Pompeo a “butt boy” for defending the Saudi crown prince in the killing of Jamal Khashoggi.

“Please allow me to say this face-to-face,” she said at the beginning of the 6 a.m. show. “The term is crass and offensive and I apologize to everybody, especially the LGBTQ community and to my colleagues.”

She added: “I just wanted to say on camera, looking people straight in the eye: I am really, really sorry.”

On Wednesday, Brzezinski slammed Pompeo for his defense of Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman, who the CIA concluded ordered the murder of the dissident Washington Post journalist inside the kingdom’s consulate in Istanbul.

“I understand that Donald Trump doesn’t care,” Brzezinski said on the air Wednesday. “But why doesn’t Mike Pompeo care, right now? Are the pathetic deflections that we just heard, when he appeared on ‘Fox & Friends,’ is that a patriot speaking, or a wannabe dictator’s butt boy? I’m dead serious. I’m asking, Are these the words of a patriot?”

Her comments drew criticism from President Trump and the US ambassador to Germany, Richard Grenell, who is openly gay.

“If it was a Conservative that said what ‘crazed’ Mika Brzezinski stated on her show yesterday, using a certain horrible term, that person would be banned permanently from television,” Trump tweeted Thursday.

“She will probably be given a pass, despite their terrible ratings. Congratulations to @RichardGrenell, our great Ambassador to Germany, for having the courage to take this horrible issue on!” he said in another tweet.

Grenell tweeted Wednesday: “This is totally unacceptable & deeply disturbing. Sexualizing gay people this way is designed to control them & minimize our worth.”

He added: “Your words demean, mock and therefore try to control whole groups by minimizing our humanity.”

Brzezinski apologized later Wednesday via Twitter, saying she used a “SUPER BAD choice of words .. I should have said ‘water boy.’”
